Abstract:
Did growth generate more jobs in Slovakia? While aggregate labor and
enterprise statistics suggest positive answer, more sophisticated measure of
job flows at microeconomic level shows the opposite. The authors develop
simple framework and show limits of the latter approach, particularly
because of likely sample selection bias, which often influences results of
this type of analyses. The main message of the paper is that estimates of
job flows should always be taken with caution, within existing economic
environment. The authors also show that, as predicted by theory, jobs in
Slovakia are created mainly in the sector of small enterprises and
self-employment.
