On buttons and balls that cannot run away
Abstract:
Circular discs (and Euclidean balls) have the property that any two disjoint parallel tangent lines
(and planes) have identical distance from each other, but there are other sets with the same property.
The talk gives a survey of some known results and a famous conjecture surrounding these sets.
It contains videoclips to demonstrate some surprising behavior, like the drilling of a square hole.
