Juraj Kyselica (Geofyzikální ústav AV ČR):
Channelised convection in a solidifying mushy region

Abstract:
Mushy regions are reactive porous media that typically form during the solidification of multicomponent systems.
Typical examples of mushy regions in nature and industry are the sea ice, magma chambers, Earth's core,
moons' icy mantles or solidifying metal alloys. Compositional convection in mushy regions leads to the formation
of so-called chimneys, narrow channels devoid of solid through which the buoyant fluid escapes the mush.
We will discuss the mathematical model of a single chimney and its drainage region.
The model aims to determine the radius of the convective channel, the radius of the corresponding drainage region,
as well as to quantify the mass and heat fluxes between the mush and the adjacent liquid region.
