Convective instability of a ternary mushy layer

Abstrakt:

We describe a model for convection and solidification of ternary alloys in mushy layers.

We perform a linear stability analysis to explore the influence of phase change effects

due to latent heat release, solute rejection and background solidification.

Novel modes of instability, both direct and oscillatory, that exist under statically stable conditions are identified.

We identify these instabilities asymptotically in the limit of a thin mushy layer and confirm these predictions

numerically using a pseudospectral Chebyshev collocation method.
