Dear all,

Could you do me a favor? Tilburg University is currently actively
advertising their PhD programme. They are especially interested in
Central Europe given the thorough quantitative education. Would you mind
forwarding this e-mail message together with the attachment below to all
students at your school?

As a Tilburg alumni, I recommend it highly. The Department of Finance at
Tilburg is world known for its top-class academic researchers. Most
importantly, it is a very friendly environment. In the last year, I have
visited over a dozen of Finance departments around the world and I have
not seen better! Most of you are likely at a very late stage in your
doctoral research, but for your younger friends this might be a great
opportunity. They should seriously consider it.

Thank you all for forwarding this message to your colleagues. Your help
is much appreciated.

Best wishes,

Viorel Roscovan

Dear students,

Allow me to draw your attention to the fact that at Tilburg University
we have a challenging PhD programme. We train people to become academics
who are employable as lecturers/professors at any university in Europe,
North-America and Asia.

Tilburg University has the highest research ranking (these are quite
objective rankings) in economics in Europe (we have been ranked above
the London School of Economics, Oxford and Cambridge) in several
research rankings based on top international publications.

Our Phd programme is very international with students from Netherlands,
Belgium, China, Russia, Portugal, Canada, Israel, Switzerland, Germany,
Hungary, Poland, Sweden, Slovenia, etc. Our finance faculty includes
people from the Netherlands, Belgium, Italy, Germany, Greece, Austria,
Argentina, Switzerland.

The past few years, our PhD alumni were hired by Cambridge University,
Oxford University, University of Chicago, the University of Toronto, New
York University, University of Warwick, University of Lancaster,
University of Amsterdam, Erasmus University, University of Toulouse,

We require that our students have had a good training in quantitative
skills and master English very well. Students with a relevant master
degree will have one year of doctoral course work (instead of 2 years)
which is then followed by 3 years of PhD research.

Please note that we have scholarships for the year of the doctoral
course work (e.g. the Koopmans grants are Euro 12000 per year) and
successful students who are admitted to the PhD programme will become
employees of the university with a salary of Euro 85000 (cumulative over
3 years) and with pension benefits.

I attach a document which gives details about our PhD programma. I hope
that you can send it to all your last year students in the economics,
finance, management. Interested students can email me directly (the
email address is given below and on the attached document).

Kind regards

Luc Renneboog

Large salary for students accepted to the PhD programme (the research years). Students are university employees with a gross salary of about Euro 85,000 (cumulatively over 3 years) and with pension benefits.
We have recently placed Phd graduates at the University of Chicago, the University of Toronto, Cambridge University, Oxford University, New York University, University of Warwick, University of Lancaster, University of Amsterdam, Erasmus University, New Economic School of Moscow, University of Toulouse, etc.

Dear student,

Tilburg University, is always looking for strong candidates for our doctoral (MPhil/PhD) programmes. Our MPhil programme consists of the doctoral course work and is a requirement before entering the PhD phase (which consists of research). Our aim is to train excellent academics who are employable at the very best universities in Europe, North-America and Asia.

CentER (Center for Economic Research) of Tilburg University has the highest research ranking (these are quite objective rankings) in economics in Europe (we have been ranked above the London School of Economics, Oxford and Cambridge) in several research rankings based on top international publications. Our working language is English.

The finance department is quite international with e.g. 4 professors from Belgium, 2 colleagues from Argentina, 4 from Italy, 1 from Germany, 1 from Austria; 1 from Greece, 1 from Ireland, 8 from the Netherlands etc.
We have experts in each field of finance: corporate finance, asset pricing, banking, mathematical finance, econometrics etc.
Our PhD students are from the Netherlands, Belgium, China, Russia, Portugal, Canada, Israel, Switzerland, Germany, Hungary, Poland, Sweden, Slovenia, Turkey, etc.

We are looking for people with excellent grades in their undergraduate (or graduate) programmes.
In principle, the intake requirements are Toefl/IELTS tests (which test your command of English) and the GRE or GMAT which most PhD programmes around the world require.
Toefl/IELTS can be waived in case an applicant’s previous programme was entirely in English.

If you apply, you will need to submit a file which includes e.g. your CV and grades, etc.. If you want more information have a look at the website of our Graduate School:
http://center.uvt.nl/gs/
http://center.uvt.nl/gs/gpb/
http://center.uvt.nl/research/finance/home.html
The applications deadline is 1 February, but the deadline could be extended for very good candidates. For students who do not require a visa, the application deadline is 1 July. The starting date is 1 September, although a pre-programme course starts in the final week of August.
You can find the details about the admission procedure at:
http://center.uvt.nl/gs/gpb/adm.html

Tilburg is not only an excellent place for finance, but has outstanding researchers in marketing, econometrics, accounting, strategy, operations research, micro and macro economics, etc.

The MPhil programme (which is the research master consisting of the Phd course work) takes 2 years, but with a relevant master in finance/economics/applied economics, you may be admitted immediately join the 2nd MPhil year. This training is then followed by 3 years of PhD research.

At the MPhil level, there are grants available of Euro 4800 and a few Koopmans grants of Euro 12000 – but one needs to apply early for these grants and allocation is competitive. The tuition is about Euro 1500 during the MPhil year (Euro 2000 for non-EU) but there is NO tuition anymore for the PhD years. At the PhD level, students become university employees who receive cumulatively over 3 years a gross salary of about Euro 85000 (and in addition, even pension rights).

We target the very best students as our doctoral programme is demanding. During the research phase, our students also typically spend a term at a US top university (although this is not a requirement).
In the recent past, our former PhD students were hired by New York University, University of Chicago, University of Toronto, University of Warwick, Lancaster University, Erasmus University Rotterdam, University of Cambridge, Stanford University, University of Amsterdam, Oxford University, New Economic School (Moscow), University of Toulouse, etc.

Supervision by a thesis promoter is close.
Our students are working on topics such as:
banking, mergers and acquisitions, ethical investing,
leveraged buyouts, return generating models, pension fund management,
dividend policy, private equity and hedge funds, international finance,
financial econometrics, managerial remuneration,
economic psychology and experimental economics,
divestitures and spin-offs, shareholder activism and corporate governance,
real options, venture capital, asset pricing, analysts forecasts,
mathematical finance, exchange rate models,
insider trading, behavioural finance
art markets, neuro-economics

We currently have 23 Phd students.
This is a sample of these Phd students with their topics:
Geraldo Cerqueiro (Portugal): Banking
Jeremie Lefebvre (Canada): Insider trading
Galla Salganik (Israel): Investment fund performance
Margot de Rooij (Netherlands): Neuro-economics
Baran Ducze (Turkey): Hedge funds and behavioural finance
