2012 EFA Doctoral Tutorial

In connection with the EFA 2012 Annual Meeting, a one-day EFA Doctoral Tutorial will be organized on Wednesday, August 15th, 2012, by co-chairs Loriana Pelizzon (Universita Ca’Foscari, Venice), Bruno Gérard (BI, Oslo), and Frans de Roon (Tilburg University), with the generous support of the NASDAQ-OMX Education Foundation, the Chicago Quantitative Alliance (CQA), and the European Institute for Advanced Studies in Management (EIASM).

Call for Papers

We encourage PhD students to submit completed drafts of one of their single-authored PhD papers, or well-defined and detailed research proposals. Submitters are welcome to add one or two additional page(s) raising the conceptual and methodological problems they face at the current stage of their dissertation, which they would like to discuss during the tutorial. All topics and methodological approaches within the broad field of finance are welcome. Preference will be shown for work that is substantially advanced but not fully completed. We will consider only single-authored work by ! current PhD students who have not yet been on the job market, and who are planning to participate in the job market in 2012-13 or later. Co-authored papers will not be considered. Deadline for the submission of papers is: Thursday, March 1, 2012.

Submission Guidelines

Only electronic submissions in PDF format will be considered. To create universally portable PDF files, please use the Fastlane protocol. Details can be found at:

The submission should include the full content of the research document without any identifying details such as author names, affiliation or acknowledgements. Submitters provide their name, affiliation, paper abstract as well as CV on the submission application form (see link below). Submitters are required to provide a letter from their PhD adviser verifying their current PhD student status and declaring that they have not yet participated in the job market. Suitable submissions will undergo a blind evaluation by 2 referees.

Students are encouraged to submit their work to both the EFA conference and the tutorial; however, if a paper is subsequently accepted to the main conference, it will not be considered for the doctoral tutorial. Please note that there is no submission fee required for PhD students submitting a single authored paper to the 2012 EFA Doctoral Tutorial.

The deadline for submissions to the 2012 EFA Doctoral Tutorial is March 1, 2012 (24:00 PST).

Participants

The EFA Doctoral Tutorial is held in a collaborative, open and friendly atmosphere. The selected papers will be distributed well in advance to facilitate lively discussions and questions from student and faculty participants alike. To enhance the collegiality of the tutorial, participants are expected to attend the entire event. In addition, a student whose paper is accepted for the Doctoral Tutorial is also expected to serve as a discussant for one of the other papers. All participants will receive a certificate of participation. In addition, there will be a ! group supper organized for participants of the 2012 EFA Doctoral Tutorial the evening before the event (i.e., Tuesday, August 14, 2012) – details to follow closer to the date.

Best EFA Doctoral Tutorial Paper Prizes

The best paper presented at the 2012 EFA Doctoral Tutorial will be recognized with the Best PhD Tutorial Paper prize sponsored by the NASDAQ-OMX Education Foundation. In addition, one of the presenters will be invited to present his/her work at the Chicago Quantitative Alliance (CQA) Fall Conference 2012 to be held in Chicago September 12-13, 2012.

PhD Student Auditors

A limited number of travel awards, sponsored by the NASDAQ-OMX Education Foundation, are available for eligible Finance PhD students from institutions in Eastern Europe and the CEE countries to participate in the 2012 EFA Doctoral Tutorial as auditors and to attend the EFA 2012 Annual Meeting immediately afterwards. Further information about the grants and the application procedure will be available after March 1, 2012.
