Dear Prof. Brunovský,
I would be grateful if you could bring our international Graduate Program in Economics to the attention of your top students. Our Program starts with a two year Master of Science (MSc) Economics – offered by the Institute for Advanced Studies (IHS), Vienna and the Vienna University of Technology – intended to prepare students for an academic career in economics. It can also serve as the first two years of our new PhD in Economics offered jointly by our Institute and the University of Vienna through the new Vienna Graduate School of Economics. For finance-oriented students we offer a PhD in Finance jointly with the University of Vienna and the Vienna University of Economics through the Vienna Graduate School of Finance.
The IHS and the Viennese Universities, with their internationally recognized faculty, are ideal for students wishing to acquire state-of-the-art knowledge in economics with a strong emphasis on economic and econometric theory as well as computational methods. A key feature of the MSc is its visiting professorship program, which brings prominent researchers to Vienna to teach advanced courses. In the Academic Year 2012/2013 we expect Nabil Al-Najjar (Northwestern), Larry Blume (Cornell), Marc Hallin (ULB), Kiminori Matsuyama (Northwestern), Virgiliu Midrigan (NYU), among others.
The MSc is a two-year program for students with a Bachelor’s (or equivalent) degree, who wish to receive an advanced, quantitative economics education that serves as a rigorous preparation for admission to leading PhD programs around the world. It is taught in English. Admission is highly selective; only about 10 students enter every year. This allows us to offer funding to almost all admitted students and to keep the student:faculty ratio below one.
Students with strong interest in academic careers and who perform well in the Master Program may continue for another three years and complete either the PhD program in Economics or in Finance in Vienna. Furthermore, in the past many of our exceptional students have continued their studies at top U.S. and European universities (e.g. LSE, Toulouse, Northwestern, UCLA or Yale).
We actively seek a diverse student body (past students have come from, among other countries, China, Croatia, Germany, Hungary, India, Iran, Russia, Sierra Leone, Slovakia, Thailand, Ukraine and USA) and would very much welcome your best students in our MSc.
If you have any questions, please do not hesitate to contact me, or to visit our web page at
http://economics.ihs.ac.at where you can find detailed information on the program as well as on the application process. The deadline for application is March 1, 2013. Any administrative queries should be addressed to
economics@ihs.ac.at.
Thank you very much for your time! Best regards,
