2nd Call for Papers
The Annual Meeting of the Austrian Economic Association (NOeG) will be held at the
Vienna University of Economics and Business Administration (WU-Wien)
Vienna , May 23-24, 2008
This year’s main topic is
10 years EMU
On 1 January 2009 , it will be ten years since the start of the final stage of Economic and Monetary Union (EMU) and the launch of the euro. The conference will undertake a review of EMU after 10 years. Some of the questions to be dealt with are: the change in euro area’s policy mix, given its asymmetric policy approach (central monetary and decentralized fiscal policy); the need for coordination in a system of decentralized fiscal policy; the euro and intra-EU trade; the impact of the euro on growth and employment; the international role of the euro; euro-area enlargement; the euro and its impact on international stability and volatility; how does real life in the euro area match with the theoretical expectations at the outset?
Invited speakers:
Keynote: Prof. Paul de Grauwe (Katholieke Universiteit Leuven) on “10 years EMU – What we expected and what we got?”
NOeG Special Lecture: Philip R. Lane (Institute for International Integration Studies, Trinity College , Dublin ) on “International Currencies and Global Imbalances”.
Panel Discussion on “The pros and cons of the Euro”

We invite you to submit papers either on this year’s conference topic or on all other fields of economics.
It is planned to publish a selection of papers dealing with the main topic of this conference in a special issue of Empirica.
Special Award for Young Economists:
The Austrian Economic Association offers a prize of EUR 750 for outstanding papers of economists of age 35 or less . In case of joint papers, all co-authors have to fulfill this condition. The papers have to be presented at the Annual Meeting.

Please submit a first version of your paper and an abstract via the conference homepage (

Decisions about acceptance will be issued by March 28, 2008 .

http://www.wu-wien.ac.at/europainstitut/noeg). Members of NOeG have free access to the annual meeting. The conference fee for nonmembers is EUR 100,--.
